How the call for less sugar is affecting weddings

Weddings are iconic for extravagant cakes, sugar-heavy drinks and desserts galore, but a lot of people are choosing to opt for a less sugar-infused wedding day in exchange for various tasty and less sugary alternatives. In this article, I uncover the real reasons why this new trend is taking off in 2019.
Sugar has always been a talking point on the news particularly from the mouths of the health conscious, but up until recent times, weddings have always been a bit of an exception to the rule and fuelled by the sugar-heavy goods that have been an integral part of proceedings for hundreds of years. But it does seem a bit backwards that brides and grooms make a conscious effort to lose weight before the big day to put it all back on again as your wedding day unravels.
Wedding Cheese Boards
A fruit-heavy cake has been the chosen wedding cake for generations, whether the bride and groom like fruit cake or not, but in a recent article from The Telegraph it has been reported that more people than ever are choosing cheese over fruit in a bid to avoid the extra sugar intake. Couples are opting to swap out sugary desserts and confectionary for piles of cheese wheels decorated with even more cheesy goodness.
Mr Swinscoe the owner of The Courtyard Dairy in Lancaster reported to The Telegraph that "A lot of people like the whole experience - they come to our shop and taste all the cheese and it's a real experience. A lot of people want to avoid sugar and also a lot of people do not like fruit cake.”

The popularity of alcohol-free and healthier drink options at weddings is ever-growing, more and more people are choosing these alternatives. Besides, not everyone wants to drink at a wedding and with plenty of other options to choose from, they don’t have to.

If you or someone you know is planning to get married and wants to follow this trend of healthier alternatives, then avoiding a buffet is probably a great option, unless your wedding couple have chosen to put on a spread full of healthy goodness. If you can, enjoy the sit-down offering or a vegetarian or vegan dish to avoid the extra sugar intake. Becoming more popular amongst millennials as they start to adapt wedding traditions, this trend is going to grow and grow.
